About your instructors
An Englishman who has lived most of his life as an American, Steve has for the past 13 years taught design and graphics courses at Indiana University. Before this, he worked for almost two decades in newspaper graphics departments, including 16 years at the Chicago Tribune, where he was Graphics Editor and later Senior Artist.
Steve has won numerous awards for his graphics and design work, which he keeps in a drawer somewhere, and in 2001 he was a small part of a large project on airline gridlock that was awarded that year’s Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Journalism.
During his time at the Tribune, Steve took part in three major redesigns and witnessed firsthand and on a day-by-day basis the accelerating pace of change that continues to transform the world’s media companies.
He is a graduate of the University of Florida.
Eva Topolewski is currently a senior majoring in Media Advertising. She has two years of design experience at Malezia, where she has been involved in designing products, newsletters, and advertisements. Last summer, Eva served as an art director at AbelsonTaylor, a pharmaceutical advertising agency in Chicago. As a junior, she assisted in teaching Graphic Design 1. Additionally, she worked as a graphic designer in the Media School’s communications office. This semester, Eva will also be teaching A251, Creative Content Development in Advertising.
Danny Gutierrez is a two-time Media School alum. He completed his Bachelors in Media Advertising in the spring of 2021 and his Masters in Media Management in the summer of 2023. He has two years of experience working as an AI, where he taught C226: Visual Communications and C250: Story Lab 1. He is currently working full time as a Marketing & Communications Specialist for IU Education Abroad and University Communications & Marketing (UCM).
Chad Stum is a Creative Director and Commercial Director living in Bloomington, Indiana. He founded and ran a full-service production company in Chicago, Original Six Media. Chad returned to Indiana to take a job with IU's advertising agency, leading video production for all IU campuses. He currently is a Creative Director and Head of Creative Production for Spectrio in Tampa Bay, FL as well as the Owner and Creative Director for Chad Stum Agency (or CSA). He is married with two kids and will find any excuse to get outside in the woods!
Cailin O’Malley is a senior studying journalism with a specialization in Graphic Communication and a minor in Studio Art. She has been involved with the Indiana Daily Student since her sophomore year, with roles including Design Editor, Creative Director and most recently, Editor-in-Chief for the Summer 2023 session. Cailin is currently a graphic designer with The Media School’s Communications Office and plans to continue her work in graphic design after she graduates this spring.
Lars Conard is a senior at Indiana University, working toward completing his Bachelors in Interactive Media. He has experience with 2D/3D digital design, animation, programming and machining, and is currently employed as a Graphic Design Intern at International Gaming Technologies (IGT).
